A bunch of hot air

Dyson

Dyson already provided consumers with an oblong, bladeless fan that blows cool air around the room. Now it has a warm-air version.

The Dyson Hot costs $400 and shuts off automatically when it tips over, like other space heaters do. Dyson also claims that the product’s surface won’t burn dust particles, which means that it won’t emit the burning odor that most heaters do when they’re turned on after a long season of dormancy.

Consumers Digest sampled the product, and we found that it performed as advertised. It features a digital thermostat that can be set between 32 and 99 degrees Fahrenheit either on the product or via an included remote control. The Dyson Hot performs like a space heater that costs less, but unlike other space heaters, it never becomes hot to the touch or a risk for burning skin. The product made the room in which we tried it noticeably warmer than adjacent rooms were. It also produces a soft noise much like that of an oscillating fan, although that didn’t prevent us from sleeping through the night when it was on.
