Of course, investors often take advice from Wall Street analysts. But buy, hold, sell and outperform ratings can be misleading. A rating of outperform, for example, can mean that a company is expected to do better than the rest but still go down in price, says Stephen T. McClellan, who is the author of “Full of Bull.” Ratings are used to generate trading volume/commissions, hence the continual changes, says McClellan, who spent 32 years as a securities analyst on Wall Street.
