Handles for the frosty rider

Gripos

If winter winds aren’t likely to keep you off your bicycle, Gripos has a pricey product that might at least keep your hands warm.

Gripos has a line of battery-powered heated grips that are called A’ME for ATVs, bicycles, motorcycles and snowmobiles. The grips run between $130 and $200, depending on the vehicle.

The company claims that a full battery will give you 1–2 hours of heat at the grips’ midlevel setting, which means that you’ll have to charge the battery between rides to avoid letting the handles run cold. (A full charge takes 4 hours.)

John Svenson of Gripos says the heated grips are preferable to thick gloves, because by wearing thinner gloves with the grips, riders maintain their dexterity and circulation through their hands. Still, with a $200 price and a finite amount of warmth with each charge, a thick pair of gloves and shorter riding times probably remain the more cost-efficient choice for consumers.
