Urban Cultivator

Consumers who want to grow fresh herbs and spices for their meals year-round in the comfort of their kitchen now can grow enough to season a feast for a battalion.

Consumers Digest got a look at the Kitchen Cultivator from Urban Cultivator at the 2012 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Chicago. Although smaller such devices have been available for years, the Kitchen Cultivator opens up space for four different plants in cabinet space that measures 34 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 24 inches deep. The Kitchen Cultivator can be built into your kitchen cabinetry (price dependent on design and placement), or it can stand alone (on casters) with a cutting board on top. The inside of the cabinet is lit and temperature-controlled for plants.

But at $2,200, compared with $200 for a similar kitchen countertop device, the Kitchen Cultivator can leave a bad taste in your mouth.
