You don’t have to be a homeowner to qualify for a tax deduction. Now renters in all states might be eligible for a form of property tax relief, says Roni Deutch, who is the author of “The Tax Lady’s Guide to Beating the IRS.” The credit is intended to offset the property taxes that tenants pay as part of their rent.
However, renters often face residency, age and income requirements to receive the tax credit. In Maryland, for example, you must be a senior citizen, disabled or meet income requirements. To learn if you qualify for tax relief, contact state taxation officials.
