Tax-Prep Software Maintains Status Quo
Don’t look for any significant changes in tax-prep software programs—now, or anytime in the immediate future. That’s because consumers tend to be pretty loyal to their products. Consequently, the companies that develop tax-prep software have no incentive to make major changes in the way that their programs look or work, experts say.
Of course, tax-prep programs adjust to annual changes to the tax code (which is why you can’t use the same program in consecutive years). And you’ll likely notice minor tweaks to existing features, such as ways to improve error-checking. But the lack of major changes also means price stability. In general, the price for tax-prep software programs hasn’t changed since we last evaluated the category 4 years ago.
