This midsize sedan takes on the Asian imports with a winning combo of agreeable performance, comfort and utility. The Fusion comes standard with a just-sufficient 160-hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a choice of a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission; a more pleasing 221-hp 3.0-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic are optional. Ride and handling characteristics are reasonably well balanced. Anti-lock brakes are standard, and all-wheel drive is optional for added responsiveness and wet-road traction. The sedan’s five-passenger interior is sufficiently roomy and comes trimmed in premium materials. Six airbags are standard. Available features include a new communications/entertainment system that integrates portable media players.
