The first TVs that have 4,000-pixel resolution will cost more than a new car.

LG Electronics’ 84-inch 4,000-pixel (4K) TV will cost $20,000, while the same-size model from Sony will cost $25,000. It isn’t clear why the LG model will cost less than Sony’s.

The 4K TV models will have 3840 x 2160 pixel resolution and will produce a sharper picture than current high-definition TV models deliver. However, it’s uncertain when 4K-compatible content will be available.

Both models are expected to arrive in stores in time for the holiday shopping season.
