Jan. 5, 2012—LG will introduce a superslim 55-inch organic LED (OLED) TV display at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The panel will have a depth of 3/20 inch, which makes the display slimmer than that of most smartphones.

According to Dave Hanon, who is an LG spokesperson, OLED technology doesn’t require backlighting (unlike LED/LCD displays), which is how the company was able to make such a thin display.

LG’s OLED display also uses white OLED (in addition to the traditional RGB setup), which gives the display more accurate colors and a more defined picture quality, according to Hanon.

Pricing and availability weren’t announced.
