NHTSA must learn more about emerging electronic automobile systems, report says
A report from National Academy of Science states that as electronic automobile systems advance, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will have to become more knowledgeable about system safety features.
Citing Toyota’s acceleration problems and subsequent recalls in 2009–2010, the report states that NHTSA handled the matter properly but must become more familiar with new automobile-technology systems to better address potential defects.
The report recommends that NHTSA develop an advisory team of design, software and technology experts who can be consulted during safety investigations.
