Snuff Halloween fire fears by checking your costume’s fabric
As children deliberate over Halloween disguises, Consumer Product Safety Commission says parents should avoid buying costumes that are made of flammable material.
Although many costumes are labeled as “flame resistant” or “flame retardant,” parents should check the costume’s label to make sure that a costume is made out of nylon or polyester, which are flame-resistant fabrics.
Costume accessories, such as beards, masks and wigs should also be made out of nylon or polyester.
And if you go with a homemade costume, you should avoid cotton and linen, because they can burn quickly if they’re exposed to an open flame, CPSC says.
