Nissan Versa
List: $13,355–$16,255; Invoice: $12,914–$15,702

Nissan’s entry in the re-energized subcompact segment is offered in both sedan and hatchback models, with the latter being a particularly practical alternative to a compact SUV. Although its tall-roofed styling looks odd, the design affords generous interior room to accommodate tall occupants. A 122-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine provides better-than-average acceleration with fairly frugal (up to 27 mpg city/33 highway) fuel economy. You have your choice of three transmissions—a six-speed manual, four-speed automatic and (our favorite) a gearless CVT (continuously variable transmission). No stripped econobox, the Versa comes fairly well equipped with features such as standard front-side airbags; anti-lock brakes, however, are optional Elective gadgetry that’s usually offered on much costlier models includes a keyless entry/starting system, a Bluetooth wireless mobile-phone interface and a premium Rockford Fosgate stereo. A new Sport Package option is offered for 2008 on the top SL version but it’s merely a cosmetic upgrade.
