July 24, 2017—Nissan North America recalled 2007–2011 Versa sedans and 2007–2012 Versa hatchback vehicles.
The affected vehicles’ front-driver air-bag inflator might rupture because of propellant degradation that occurred after long-term exposure to moderate absolute humidity, temperatures and temperature cycling. In the event of a rupture, metal fragments might strike the driver or other occupants, which increases the risk of serious injury or death.
Nissan North America will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected inflator with a new one that’s manufactured by a different supplier for free. Remedy parts aren’t available currently. An interim owner notification letter will be sent by the end of September 2017. A second letter will be sent when remedy parts are available.
For more information, owners may call Nissan North America at 800/647-7261. Owners also may call National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236 or go to safercar.gov.
