BSH Home Appliances recalls Tassimo single-cup brewers because of burn hazard

Feb. 10, 2012—Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with BSH Home Appliances, recalled certain models of Tassimo single-cup brewers.

The plastic container, or T Disc, that holds the coffee or tea can burst and spray hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers who use the brewer and onto bystanders, posing a burn hazard.

BSH Home Appliances received 140 reports of incidents in which the brewers sprayed hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves onto consumers, including 37 reports of second-degree-burn injuries. In one incident, a 10-year-old received second-degree burns on the face and neck and was hospitalized.

This recall involves Tassimo Professional brewers and Tassimo brewers that have the Bosch brand name. The brewers use plastic T Discs that are filled with coffee or tea to brew hot drinks. Bosch and Tassimo are printed on the front of the brewers. Tassimo Professional is printed on the front of the professional model. The Bosch-brand brewers are Anthracite, black, gray, red, silver, Titanium, white and white/gray. The Tassimo Professional brewers are black.

The following model numbers and date codes are included in this recall: TAS100, TAS200, TAS451, TAS46 and TAS651 with a date-code range of FD8806 through FD9109. The recalled Tassimo Professional Brewer has model number TAS6512CUL and a date-code range of FD8905 through FD9109. The model number and date code are located on the bottom of the brewer. No other Tassimo brewer is included in this recall.

The recalled product was sold in department, home-improvement and mass-merchandise stores across the United States and Canada and on various websites, including tassimodirect.com, from June 2008 through February 2012 for $100–$250. The Tassimo Professional model was sold directly to hotels and food-service providers, and Tassimo will contact them directly.

Consumers should stop using the recalled Tassimo brewers immediately and should contact Tassimo to order a free replacement T Disc holder for the brewing mechanism.
