July 31, 2012—Publix Super Markets recalled its custom sub sandwiches that contain onions, because the onions that are used might be part of a Gills Onions recall that cited a Listeria monocytogenes risk. Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in individuals who have weakened immune systems.

The recall involves custom-made sub sandwiches that have onions and that were sold by the Publix deli department from July 7, 2012, through July 26, 2012.

The recalled sandwiches were sold at Publix stores in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. No illnesses were reported.
