Toyota recalls RAV4, Lexus HS 250h because tie rod might fail

Aug. 3, 2012—Toyota Motor recalled 2006–2011 RAV4 and 2010 Lexus HS 250h vehicles that were manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010. If the nuts for adjusting the rear-wheel alignment are tightened improperly during service, the rear tie rod might develop rust and unwanted movement, which would lead to thread damage and eventual failure. Failure of the rear tie rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle alignment and loss of vehicle control, which would increase the risk of a crash.

Toyota will develop a remedy and provide a notification schedule when the remedy is available.

Owners may contact Toyota at 800/331-4331 or Lexus at 800/255-3987. Owners also may contact National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236 or go to safercar.gov.
