July 13, 2012—Volvo recalled its 2011–2013 S80 vehicles, because a software error might prevent the transmission from downshifting, such as shifting to fourth gear from fifth gear, when the vehicle is coasting. This could cause the engine to stall, which would increase the risk of a crash.

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will upgrade the software to the transmission control module free. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about July 19, 2012.

Owners may contact Volvo at 800/458-1552. Owners also may contact National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888/327-4236 or go to safercar.gov.
