Compactors: Market Remains Flat

Compactors, like disposers, collect food waste. However, the compactors market has had even less change than its counterpart has had.

The past two years have seen no compactor innovation and little market change. The only change came from Whirlpool and its companion brands.

Whirlpool pared its own branded product line to three compactors (keeping only its most expensive models) from six in 2014. Maytag, which is a Whirlpool brand, replaced its three-model line with three models that have a new handle, among other modest design changes, and a $70 across-the-board price hike.

The biggest change was applied to the KitchenAid lineup, which is another Whirlpool brand. KitchenAid overhauled its compactor lineup in January 2015. Models that have visible controls, like Maytag’s compactors do, and cost less than $1,000 were discontinued. In their place, KitchenAid expanded its lineup of fully integrated front-panel compactors—adding black and white options to its stainless steel and custom-panel units. The models received a new handle and other design tweaks. KitchenAid also ditched the Architect Series II name on its compactors.

KitchenAid compactors now start at $1,079, compared with $879 in 2014.
